2018 Ecoboost Catch Cans

Hey everyone! So, I’ve been debating whether to install a catch can on my 2018 Ecoboost, but I keep seeing mixed reviews. Some folks say it’s worth it for engine longevity, while others say it’s unnecessary or even a gimmick. Anyone here with firsthand experience? Does it really make a difference, or is it just fan hype?

Honestly, I think catch cans are total snake oil. Unless you’re running a high-performance engine, they just aren’t needed.

I’ve heard that too! But I also see people saying it can help with oil blow-by. Do you think there’s any truth to that?

@Nyle
Maybe a little, but it’s not enough to be worth the cost, in my opinion. Manufacturers would include it if it was that crucial.

I have a Gen 1 Ecoboost and definitely see the benefit. My valves stayed cleaner, but I can see how newer models might not need it as much.

So are you saying it’s more about the engine version? I’ve got a 2019 model, wondering if it’s worth it for me.

@Jordan
Yeah, for Gen 1, it helps. For newer ones like yours, you might not see as much benefit. Ford improved things on the later models.

For anyone planning to keep their truck over 150k miles, it might be worth considering. If you don’t mind the maintenance, it could help keep the engine cleaner.

That’s a good point. I’m planning on keeping mine for a while. What kind of maintenance are we talking about here?

@Shai
Just need to remember to empty it every few thousand miles. If you can keep up with that, it’s no big deal!

I think catch cans are more of a ‘want’ than a ‘need.’ Most folks just like the idea of preventing any possible build-up. But it’s true, they’re not necessary.

Exactly, they’re more of a comfort thing. Most people won’t notice any difference with or without one.

If you’re worried about blow-by, using a low NOACK oil might be a better approach. Reduces oil vapor without the hassle of a catch can.

Interesting! What’s NOACK oil? Never heard of that before.

@Nyle
It’s just a type of oil that evaporates less under heat, so you get less oil vapor in the intake. Worth trying if you’re concerned!
