I verified this by taking my miles left down to like 15 then filled up and got slightly under 31. Does that mean they didn’t actually put in the extended tank or am I just not factoring something in?
I think there is something like a 6 gallon reserve that is still in the tank once the needle is on E.
You have the 36 (136 L) Gallon tank, the other option is 26 iirc. I drove mine when I got it until it said 0 KM on the tank and when I filled it up I put in 134 L, which is 35 ish Gallons.
I had to know what I could get out of a tank so I pushed it when I got it. Did the same when I got my 2010 15 yrs ago and got similar results.
As for the comments saying a 6 gallon reserve, the dash programming must be slightly different between US and Canada.
@Jory
I have a 26-gallon tank. 2018 XLT 2.7L. The other option was 31.
3.3/3.5 NA had a 21 option.
Is it a power boost? I believe they have a 31 gallon tank.

I believe this is the correct answer. Though, can you get a PowerBoost in an XLT?

Yes, you could in the ‘24s, not sure if that is one of the things that went away in ‘25.
Reserve tank for people who really like to push it on E
No fuel tank ever allows use of the entire capacity of the tank, there’s always some capacity “lost“ to ensure the pump stays wet, etc.
Assuming you have the 36gal tank…There’s a fairly big portion of that tank that isn’t visible on the gauge, and a portion that isn’t really usable. Most people measure it as 5-6 gallons. I have the 36 and the most I’ve ever crammed into mine was 30 and change. Don’t treat it as a usable reserve, it’s needed to cool the pump and offset that the tank baffles can make you run dry at some pavement angles.
The other tank sizes are 26 and just under 31 (Powerboost only).
@Kieran
I have put 29-30 in my 31
30 in a 36 sounds very odd. Makes me wonder if there is a programming issue

It’s apparently deliberate programming due to a hill start issue, some people have managed to get 34-35 in them when filling them for PDIs at dealers, in regular use a 3-6 gallon discrepancy persists at zero. https://www.f150gen14.com/forum/threads/36-gallon-fuel-tank.21560/ In my case it’s probably because I’ve never actually run it all the way to zero, just close enough.
@Kieran
My point is that for a 36 gallon tank to show E on 30-32
While a 30.6 takes 29 gallons on E
Is weird
I know there is always extra. 6 gallon is extreme and really makes me wonder if they programmed it wrong
@Jensen
My point is it appears they programmed it ‘wrong’ on purpose, because they had an issue with hill starts on the 36 gallon tanks in the past. Fuel wouldn’t get to the pump under certain circumstances. Instead of redesigning the tank, they just shifted where zero was, is the explanation I’ve seen given many times over the years this particular tank has been in use.
Plenty of reports people driving the 36 gallon tank to upwards of -100 miles on the gauge. Not recommended but only then would a person get near 36 gallons on the refill.

Makes me wonder if somehow they are programmed to believe they have a 30.6 ie powerboost tank vs a 36
You either get a 23 gal or a 36 gal, unless it’s a powerboost then it’s a 30.6gal tank - which sounds like your “slightly under 31” fill up.
You can see this on the ford website under “fuel capacity” - https://www.ford.com/trucks/f150/2024/models/f150-xlt/
Once my truck (2023 3.5 EB w/ extended range gas tank) says it has zero miles til empty I can generally go easily 60 to 65 more miles. I want to test it and see how far till it stops but I chicken out. When I fill it up then it takes 35 gal.
