Bought a 2021 3.5 Powerboost today... Should I be worried?

I just bought a 2021 F150 Lariat Powerboost 3.5 with 53,000 miles. It was Ford Gold certified and showed no issues on the Carfax (although I know that doesn’t always mean much). After setting up the Ford Pass app, I saw the maintenance history, which shows that over a year ago, the vehicle had transmission, clutch, axle, and electrical work done. Should I be concerned? It still has 12/10,000 Gold and 42 months with 40k+ powertrain left. Any thoughts on this? Should I consider getting a Ziegler full warranty for another 6 years, bumper to bumper, for $2,500? I’ve attached a picture of the maintenance history (it shows 56k from a year ago, which seems odd). Thanks!

I took my PowerBoost in for some net issues, and they reported electrical work in my service records too. The funny part is, my truck only has 13,000 miles, but it was reported at 23,000 miles. Lol!

Congrats on the purchase! I got my 2021 last year with 52,000 miles, and I haven’t had any issues. I did get the extended warranty from Ford, though, just because the hybrid system was new and made me a little nervous.

I have a 2021 Powerboost Platinum with 19,000 miles. The service history is quite long in the app, and I ended up buying the extended warranty for peace of mind.

I wouldn’t be too worried. Hopefully, any transmission issues were already fixed. The electrical work could just be a minor issue, like a low auxiliary battery replacement. I had the same low battery issue, which also caused my speakers to sound off, but after replacing it, everything was fine. I got my 2021 Lariat Powerboost in August 2023 with 45,000 miles. Since then, I’ve had a few issues, like the low battery and some transmission reprogramming for harsh shifting. But now, everything runs great, and I’m at 95,000 miles. I do regular oil changes every 5,000 miles and had the tail fluid changed at 90,000 miles. I’d recommend getting the extended warranty, especially considering how complex these trucks are nowadays. The Ziegler warranty sounds like a good idea for $2,500.

@Day
Thanks for all the info! I’m definitely planning to do oil changes every 5k based on what everyone has said. I agree, the warranty seems like a no-brainer, especially with all the complex electrical systems.

Thanks for all the replies! One more thing — when I slow down to 20mph or below, I hear a turbine-like noise that’s pretty noticeable. Is this sound coming from the hybrid power system? It happens when I slow down to stop at lights, or could it be the transmission?

@Sky
It’s probably the electric motor noise you’re hearing. I mostly notice it at low speeds, or when sitting in a drive-thru. I had the dealership check it out, and they confirmed it’s the electric motors making that noise.

@Sky
Just to be sure, take it in when you can and have them check your transmission. They’ll probably reprogram it, which seems to be a common fix for transmission issues with these trucks. The transmission is supposed to relearn based on your driving habits, especially if you’re a new driver.

@Sky
It might be the ‘spaceship’ noises the truck makes. Hybrid vehicles are required to produce some artificial sound under 19mph for pedestrian safety, regardless of whether they are in full electric mode or not. It’s the same with the backup beeps.

I’ve got a 2021 Lariat Powerboost, and I’m at 58,000 miles now. Don’t worry, you’ll be fine! What you’re hearing is just the truck going into full electric mode. Also, the jerk from first to second or third gear is normal when the truck switches from electric to gas.

Sounds like the recalls being applied to your vehicle. It seems like the dealership has been taking good care of it, though.
