New member here seeking advice on what to buy. My current car’s value is lower than expected, so my budget for a truck is around $12-15k. I want something durable and reliable. I am currently considering a 2009 model with the 5.4 Triton flex-fuel engine.
Thoroughly test drive it before purchasing. Pay attention to the transmission is there a noticeable thump when shifting from 2nd to 3rd? Does it lag when shifting into 8th? Does it thump into drive when starting cold? Check the idle hours and inspect the frame for excessive rust. Avoid trucks with lift kits, wheel spacers, or many aftermarket parts; you can always add those later. Also, avoid trucks previously owned by very heavy people, as they often have worn-out seats.
The best advice I can give is to thoroughly inspect the vehicle. Take your time and test everything. Here’s a checklist from the outside in:
- Leak Check: Bring a bright flashlight. Get underneath and check common spots for leaks. Inspect the shocks, struts, and rear end. Look around the transfer case and under the engine for any buildup of crud indicating a leak. There shouldn’t be any fluid or seepage. Also, check the dipsticks; a certified vehicle should have fresh fluids.
- Tires: Check the date on the sidewall and look for uneven wear. If the tires are over six years old, have them replaced with OEMs, not off-brand ones. If the wear is uneven, request an alignment and a rotation before taking possession.
- Lights: Ensure all headlights, fog lights, brake lights, reverse lights, and interior lights are working. The blinkers and emergency flashers should flash uniformly. If one side flashes quicker, have them replace the bulbs.
- Doors and Windows: Open and close all doors and the liftgate. Ensure they lock and unlock properly. Roll down all windows and test every door switch.
- Interior Mechanicals: Test all seat adjustments. Check the glove box, armrest, and other compartments to ensure they open and close smoothly.
- Interior Electronics: Test the HVAC system for both hot and cold air, listening for any noise. Ensure the radio works and the speakers aren’t blown. Connect your phone to test connectivity.
- Test Drive: Ensure the wipers clean the windshield evenly. Drive over rough spots to check the steering. Perform a U-turn and an on-ramp acceleration to feel the turbos. Ensure all instruments work. Drive away from the dealership for at least 15 minutes before heading back.
- Check the Statistics: Review fuel economy figures and averages on Trip A and Trip B to understand how the vehicle has been treated. Check the oil life and confirm it has fresh fluids. Look at engine and idle hours for any discrepancies.
TLDR: Inspect everything thoroughly. Take your time and ensure any issues are fixed before purchase. Avoid buying a truck with old tires.
In 2018, my family and I each bought new F150s with a 5.0 engine. I purchased mine in July of that year and have since put over 50,000 miles on it without any issues. The same goes for my family members’ trucks. You can find the details of my other truck in my signature.
