Confused by ABRP

Planning a 700-mile trip in a few weeks. Why does ABRP have me stopping every 60 miles to charge for 20 mins? Why not maximize range and stop every couple hundred miles? If I’ve found a good charger, why not just fill up as much as I can until the charge rate slows down? Charging from 20% to 60% just to make the next charger seems unnecessary.

ABRP is set up to save time by keeping you in the fastest part of the charge curve. DC fast chargers slow down a lot once you’re over 60-80%. Plus, keeping the battery above 20% is better for long-term health.

I’m still new to EVs… I get nervous once I hit 30%, so I usually charge up to 80% or a little more.

If you’re using ABRP, grab an OBD2 dongle that works with the app. It can pull live data from your truck and give really accurate predictions. I’ve set mine to hit chargers with 10% left, and it’s always within 2%.

The whole idea is that two shorter stops from 20% to 60% are faster than one long stop from 10% to 90%. It might not feel more efficient, but that’s how the charging curve works. You should be able to tweak the settings to prefer fewer stops.

There’s a slider in ABRP settings where you can choose between longer stops or more frequent shorter stops. These trucks charge pretty fast up to 80%, so I’d personally prefer fewer stops and charge from 20-80%.

@Lael
Ah, found that slider! That definitely helps — I knew I could do the first half in three stops instead of six. Thanks!

Yeah, if you hit the three horizontal bars in the top left (on Android at least), there’s a setting where you can adjust the stop frequency — “Few but long” vs. “Short but many.”

Got it, thanks!

@Finlo
Just FYI — if you stay longer at a charger than ABRP suggests, it will recalculate your stops if you’re using an OBD2 dongle or manually update your battery percentage.

Is that with the paid version? I only have ABRP on my phone. I usually plan my stops with it, then switch between Ford Nav and Google Maps. Once I know where I’m stopping, I use PlugShare to find chargers near stores or restaurants.

@Finlo
I’m on the free version and use an OBD2 adapter. It updates your plan based on your current charge.

I did a 600-mile trip with Ford Nav recently, and it worked pretty well. It showed chargers along the way and rerouted me if I couldn’t make my destination. Definitely made things easier.
