Considering this truck… What do you think? I’m in the market but not very knowledgeable. Any advice?
What’s the asking price?
I just got a brand-new F150 XL for $44,000…
5.0L engine, if that helps.

That’s definitely a good price!

Here’s how I look at it: I’d rather spend $44,000 on a truck, drive it 100,000 miles, and sell it for $20,000. That’s a $22,000 total cost.
Or I could buy a $22,000 truck, drive it another 100,000 miles, spend about $5,000 on maintenance, and sell it for maybe $5,000. That also comes out to $22,000 total.
Find out if it had the cam phaser update—if not, it could cost you around $5,000 down the road.

Appreciate the tip!

They told me that only applies to the 5.4 Triton engine.

That’s completely wrong.
Do your research on these Ecoboost engines.
They’re considered one of the least reliable drivetrain options.
I own one.
@Delaney
You’ll definitely want that cam phaser/VCT unit fix. It cost me $6,000 for that plus the water pump at my dealership.

Not true. The 2018–2019 3.5 Ecoboost models also have cam phaser issues, though Ford did update them and has covered partial costs for some repairs. Mine failed at 130,000 miles, and I had to get lawyers involved to avoid paying $7,300 for cam phasers, a water pump, and EWC.
@Quill
Was this issue fixed in the 2022 F-150?

They redesigned it for 2022, but some owners are still reporting issues.

Since it’s at a Ford dealership, you might be able to negotiate a new cam phaser into the price. If they agree, have them replace the water pump too while they’re in there.

They’re solid trucks—I love mine (2018 3.5L 10-speed), but I’ve had to take it to the shop every year. I’ve had both front hubs, the radiator, EWC valve, a cracked valve cover, and the cam phasers replaced. My warranty covered most of it, but the total repair costs added up to $12,000–$13,000 since 2020. Bought it at 68,000 miles, now it’s at 143,000. Hoping it holds up because it’s a great truck overall. Just do your homework so you’re not caught off guard. Reliability is never a guarantee.

Avoid the 3.5L with the 10-speed transmission—tons of issues. Cam phaser problems and transmission failures are common. I traded in my 2018 with 125,000 miles because it needed both fixes, which would’ve cost me $10,000.
I bought a 2019 two months ago for $28,000 with 58,000 miles.

Where are you? That sounds like a West Coast price. Over here in the Southeast, a Limited model runs between the mid-$30,000s to low $40,000s.
Though I see you didn’t mention the trim level. XL models are cheaper here, especially with tow packages and the 3.5L Ecoboost.
@Emerson
It’s an XLT V8. I’m in West Virginia.

That makes sense. I’d consider an XLT, but my family insists on heated rear seats. Happy to accommodate, but it adds to the cost. Thought about upgrading the seats myself, but time is money.
