Do Brake Lights Come On When Using One Pedal?

When you release the gas while using one pedal, do the brake lights turn on? I almost got hit from behind and I’m wondering if the driver couldn’t tell I was slowing down.

Yes, the brake lights come on when using one pedal drive. The driver who almost hit you was probably distracted by how cool your truck is.

Exactly!

That’s right.

The brake light activates through an accelerometer. Whenever the truck decelerates with more force than a set limit, the brakes light up.

So if you’re gently decelerating, your lights might not come on. It’s similar to using a strong engine brake. I’ve checked this while driving on dark back roads using my side mirrors.

@Blaine
That sounded like what the guy behind was doing, looking back to see if the brake lights came on.

Are you saying I need to focus on the road instead of testing my truck’s brake lights?

@Blaine
Not at all! Sorry if that was how it seemed. You were smart to figure it out on a back road, but I could see someone trying to multitask in traffic.

Haha, okay! I’m a bit on edge today for other reasons. Let’s keep it friendly =)

Old man yelling at cloud time, but that’s wild! Not sure if I hate it or think it’s genius.

@Avery
Coasting doesn’t trigger brake lights on ICE vehicles, even if you slow down significantly. This seems to improve what was there before.

This should be standard on all vehicles.

In sport mode without one pedal drive, the vehicle decelerates quickly. I’ve tried checking if my brake lights illuminate and it’s hard to tell. Should the brake lights come on in this situation?

@Jai
Only if your brake lights are broken! Love the English language.

Haha, I caught myself on the first one and missed the second one lol.

My experience shows that even slight deceleration triggers them. For me, it’s when my foot feels off the pedal enough to avoid coasting.

@Morgan
I’ve seen the same. It makes sense that Ford would err on the side of caution, and it seems like that’s what they did.

Yes, they turn on. The driver just wasn’t paying attention.

Definitely! This was a big issue a while back when it was found that Hyundai didn’t have this feature on the Ioniq 5, leading to many rear-end accidents. Ford appears to have got it right.
