Does Cold Weather Affect Powerboost Hybrid Performance?

I have a 2023 Powerboost and live in Michigan. Since it’s gotten colder, I’ve noticed the truck doesn’t switch to electric drive as often. I also had the alternator replaced recently, so I’m wondering if the weather or the alternator change is causing this.

Are any other Powerboost owners experiencing less time running on battery power in the cold?

Let me know your thoughts!

Lithium batteries can’t be charged below freezing without risking damage, but it’s fine to discharge them in cold weather. The truck likely warms the battery first before letting it charge. This takes time, so on short trips, the hybrid system might not work fully. And don’t forget winter gas can also impact performance.

I have a 2022 Powerboost, and I’ve noticed the same thing.

Yeah, I’ve noticed the battery doesn’t kick in much when it’s cold outside. I’ve been thinking about using the block heater to see if it helps.

The battery is located under the bed near the rear of the cab, so the block heater might not do much for it. But warming up the engine certainly wouldn’t hurt if it’s really cold.

If you’re running the heater, the engine will start up to provide heat if it isn’t already warm. That’s probably why you’re noticing it more in the winter.

It’s normal for hybrids to behave this way in the cold. My wife’s 2024 RAV4 hybrid does the exact same thing when the temperature drops.

Thanks for all the input! It’s good to know this is a common thing and not just my truck.
