I’ve got a 2016 3.5L and am thinking of upgrading the exhaust. I’m considering Roush but open to other brands. I’m looking for something that sounds good—deep and aggressive, but not obnoxious or tinny (no hamster farting in a coffee can vibes). Any recommendations or experiences?
Honestly, I’d just stick with the stock exhaust. You’ll never get it to sound like anything other than a V6.
I’ve been looking at the Borla Touring dual exhaust. From what I’ve read, it has a deep tone and is relatively quiet but louder than stock. It’s not about volume—just a nice, clean, low sound. Haven’t heard one in person yet, though.
@Ellis
That’s what I’ve got on my ’18 3.5 Lariat. It sounds much better than stock and doesn’t have any drone.
@Ellis
I switched from a 3.5L Ecoboost to a 5.0L for towing full-time. The sound difference is huge—5.0L is coarser and raspier under load, while the 3.5L is smoother. Borla Touring sounds like a good middle ground for keeping things refined.
There’s a guy at my college who runs an exhaust on his 3.5L that sounds really unique. I’ll try to ask him what it is and let you know.

Appreciate that! Let me know what he says.
I’m here for the suggestions too!
Do you have any custom shops nearby? I got a new catalytic converter, muffler, mid-pipe, and downstream sensor for $1,200. It has a nice low sound. Might be worth checking into custom options.
I’m a fan of Roush. Solid choice.
Check out the AWE OFG on YouTube. It sounds really good—thinking about getting one myself.
I had the MBRP 4-inch on my 2012 3.5L and loved it. It sounded even better after adding downpipes.

That’s what I have now. Love how it sounds, especially in the lower RPMs. What downpipes did you use?
@Ray
SPD Performance. I’m planning to use the same cat-back setup on my ’21 soon.
Honestly, I wouldn’t bother. I put an exhaust on my Ecoboost, and it ended up sounding embarrassing. Great engine, but the sound just doesn’t match.
Borla all the way.
Don’t do it.
My expansion chamber rusted out, so I replaced the exhaust with a cheap 3-inch system. Now my truck sounds like a giant ricer. Regret it big time.
The only one I’ve liked on a 3.5L Ecoboost is the Pypes cat-back. Sounds great.
I’m running SPD catted downpipes with a Borla Atak dual rear exit. It sounds fantastic—definitely recommend it.
