First Experience with Tesla Charger (Canadian)

I’m in Canada and I finally received my adapter last week. Had my first chance to use the Tesla chargers and I was expecting to have issues because in my experience nothing is ever easy when fast charging.

Thankfully I was wrong. As soon as I plugged in it started charging. And it was charging faster than I’ve ever seen at any other 3rd party charger. The best I’ve seen is 130kW but I was getting 155kW on the Tesla charger. The charging rate did fluctuate but stayed above 120 for the majority of the time.

Pros: it was truly plug and charge. And it’s quick.

Cons: it ain’t cheap. $21 for 15 minutes and 21% charge. Also, why is the cable so damn short??

V3 superchargers were designed just for Tesla Model S/3/X/Y vehicles with the charge port on the rear corner of the car. Even the CT has problems with the cord length. The V4s are better, but Tesla does not seem to often retrofit old stations with new superchargers (unless adding on, and even then they’ll leave the old ones alone).

Good grief, that’s what, $0.76/kWh? Damn. Oh wait, that’s in Canadian, ain’t it… Still bad, but probably in line with the more expensive supercharger locations in the US.

At first I looked at the pic and thought you sideways parking asshole! Then I realized you were trying not to block an additional spot. Very kind of you.

Haha no. I figured I was going to have to park sideways in order for the cable to reach and I thought if I took the last spot I wouldn’t take up any other chargers.

I should have pulled back a few feet though as I ended up blocking one charger but there was a bank of 12 and it was empty when I got there.

I know better for next time!

Fellow Canadian. There’s a reason why I have always said they’re ever only going to be emergency use only. The pricing is ridiculous.

I’ll stick to CCS all the way.

That seems excessively expensive. I just started using the Superchargers here (Vancouver Area) and it’s $0.30 per kw.

that’s peanuts

And that’s up from the $0.10 per kw last year.

I got my adapter last week (AZ2 Typhoon Pro) and I wanted to try it.

I only got 40KW charge rating for the 10 mins I spent there.

Does the rate change depending on my battery level? When I arrived at the Tesla charger it had about 80% charge ( don’t really remember).

I expected it to be way faster. I bought the adapter for a trip that I’m planning and I wanted to be safe by having more places to charge.

@Rain
Yes, you will charge a lot faster the lower in the pack you are. Try again when you are 10-20% charge and it will go a lot faster than charging 80-100%

The charge rate slows way down when charged to 80% or above. That is one reason why charging up to 80% max and heading off to your next destination saves you time on a trip. You may make more charging stops but they will be faster stops.

Here in PG it’s .34 at BC Hydro station and .57 at Journie gas station.

Definitely gotta stay at home and charge.
