Ford wants to buy back my 2024 XLT… what should I do?

I have a 2024 XLT 3.5L V6 with 6,000 miles on it. Ford offered to either repurchase my truck or give me cash to keep it. The truck had an issue with the 4-wheel drive actuators randomly engaging, causing a noise while driving. It spent 2 months in the shop and ended up needing a new front axle, but now the issue seems to be fixed.

Ford hasn’t detailed the buyback terms yet, including what they’ll charge for mileage, or what their cash offer to keep it will be. Has anyone been through this and kept their vehicle? What kind of offer did you get?

If it’s fixed and you still like the truck, I’d see what they offer. If it’s decent, I’d probably take the cash!

I know it’s unpopular, but I’ve always preferred the 5.0 over the 3.5 or 2.7. Everyone I know with a 5.0, including myself, hasn’t had any major issues. Honestly, it’s a great engine for the price.

I’ve had my 2016 5.0 for 9 years now, and it’s been rock solid. :muscle:

The 5.0 seems like a much more popular choice, honestly.

Something similar happened to me with my Cadillac Blackwing. It was in the shop for 2 months, and they couldn’t fix the issue. I had to get a lawyer involved, but they eventually offered me $10,500 to keep the car or a full buyback. I took the money.

@Taran
I don’t have a lawyer yet, but that’s my next step if needed. Ford is offering to buy it back or give me money to keep it so they can resell it. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I ended up taking the money and trading the car for an F-150. Factoring in the trade-in tax credit, it worked out well. Once I signed the papers, I had the check in about two weeks. Hope it works out for you!

@Taran
Thanks! I’ll update once I get their offer.

I understand the frustration of losing your truck for two months, but if it’s fixed now, I’m curious why Ford would want to buy it back. It might have something to do with your state’s lemon laws.

Most states’ lemon laws qualify vehicles if they’ve been in the shop for more than a month or have had multiple failed repair attempts.

@Fin
Three unsuccessful repair attempts for the same issue also qualifies in many states.

@Fin
If the OP wants to get rid of the truck, Ford will probably offer less than what a lawyer could negotiate under lemon laws, but more than the net payout after lawyer fees. Might be worth just taking their offer.

@Neve
I felt like I was having a stroke reading this, lol.

@Neve
I went the lawyer route and ended up $12k ahead of what I paid for the vehicle. Well worth the $1,200 in legal fees. Ended up replacing it with a 2017 F-150 5.0L and couldn’t be happier.

Are you happy with the 2017? I’m considering that exact truck.

@Paxton
Absolutely love it. Got it for $22.5k with 45k miles. Gas mileage sucks, but I knew that going in.

If it’s fixed, who knows what else could go wrong if it’s a lemon. If you like the truck, I’d just get a new one.

Maybe see if they’ll replace it with a new truck instead of a buyback?

Apparently they don’t do that anymore, but I’ll ask and push for it tomorrow.
