Hey everyone, I have a 2015 F150 5.0 V8 that is new to me. If I take off in a hurry in cold weather I can feel a slight jump when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. It does not happen when downshifting from 3-2 and won’t happen at all if it’s warm outside. Is this normal or should I have it checked out?
Normal
My 3.5 with the 6spd does the same, sometimes even 4th, but once it’s warm, it’s smooth. I find driving slowly for a few minutes helps bring the trans temp up to spec.

Take it in if it’s under warranty. It’s only a matter of time before the truck goes boom. New transmission on my 2020 with 106k miles and only 4k of that being towing.
@Tatum
The 6-speed is more robust/reliable than the 10-speed that your truck has. This type of behavior is pretty normal. The main issue with our transmission is the leadframe, which can get melted/molded. Signs of a bad leadframe include no speedo input, limited gears, and harsh banging while hot (not cold). In winter, harsh shifts are related to that.

What happened before it failed?
@Tatum
It’s 10 years old; pretty sure it isn’t under warranty.
My 5.0 hates running cold. Warm her up a bit.
Thanks for the quick responses, everyone. I want to take care of everything while it’s still under warranty.

How do you warm up a transmission?
Driving forward.

How do you warm up a transmission?
You simply drive?

How do you warm up a transmission?
Drive gently for the first few minutes and avoid hard acceleration. I learned my lesson when I needed a new transmission at 32k miles. I treat my newest Ford like a baby when cold, and the transmission is smooth as silk.

How do you warm up a transmission?
Metal gets hot. Oil warms up. Truck goes vroom.

How do you warm up a transmission?
Run it for a minute before driving off, and be easy on it until it’s at operating temp.
How does it behave when warm? All vehicles act up when cold.

When warm, it shifts like butter.

You have a 6-speed; you’re good.
The 5.0 with the 10-speed was always funky until the transmission warmed up. It feels like the transmission fluid is gel until it reaches temperature lol.
I had mine checked out, and it was the CDF drum. It started only when cold, then happened every time. Got it checked just before the warranty expired.
