How much are you paying for Tags/Tabs (Registration renewal) for your Lightning?

I got my first renewal and it’s $720…crazy!!

In Wisconsin:

  • $15 for personalized plates
  • $175 EV Surcharge

Same but for Michigan. Insurance is only $77/month too for $0 deductible collision and comp. Shocked me when I got the quote.

Your truck plates should be $100, not $85.

This is extremely jurisdiction-dependent. In my location, the price to register any vehicle, doesn’t matter what it is, is about $90. Starting this upcoming year, electric vehicles will have an additional $200 surcharge on top of that.

Around $1,200 or so in California. All trucks in CA are considered commercial, which is insane.

Yep, that’s a problem. But remember, you used to pay a tax on the fuel you bought, which funded road maintenance in many states. If you used 500 gallons of fuel a year at $0.50 per gallon, you’d pay $250 in taxes for road use. Do the math, you might still be ahead of the lump sum they charge yearly.

Same in Arizona.

I just registered my new (to me) Lightning. $545 for 2 years in Oregon. Took me by surprise, to be fair.

$825 for me this year, in Colorado for reference.

Montana, around $750.

Illinois has an extra $100 over standard registration.

It varies by state. My 2023 Mach-E just renewed for $783, but I have a vanity plate, which adds to the cost.

In Maryland, it’s an extra $70 on top of $110. Next year, that $70 jumps to $125.
