How can I activate a Tesla subscription to save money on a road trip? I’d like to buy a month of the service. Is it possible to connect it to my Ford Pass App?
You need to download the Tesla App and click the three bars at the top right. Then go to CHARGING and sign up for the membership.
Check if the Tesla supercharger accepts non-Tesla vehicles. Any of the older 150/120 kW stations do NOT.
You’ll also need an adapter. I use the A2Z one. It can be a bit tricky but it works.
Once you get to the station, open the app, tap the three bars at the top right, and scroll down to ‘charge your non-Tesla vehicle’. Tap ‘charge here now’ and select the station you’re at. Then scroll down and tap start. After that, connect your adapter, which you’ve already attached to the NACS (Tesla) handle.
To disconnect,
- Press the button with the five lights next to the charger handle.
- Grab the adapter (NOT THE TESLA HANDLE), press the lever button on the adapter and pull the whole thing out.
- Press the button on the Tesla handle and the lever button on the Tesla handle and pull them apart.
If step 3 doesn’t work, push the Tesla handle further into the adapter and press both buttons, then try again.
I made a video of the process, I’ll try to add it.
Edit: Here it is
You handle everything through the Tesla app.

So I shouldn’t use the Ford app like I’ve been doing at Tesla chargers? I have the Tesla app but I’ve never used it. Does activating the charger work the same way?
@Blaise
I know how I use the membership, and it’s definitely through the Tesla app. I’m not sure if there’s another option.
@Blaise
You activate the charger using the Tesla app. The key thing to remember is to plug in only when the app tells you to.
@Blaise
From what I’ve seen, if you want the Tesla subscription and discount, everything needs to be done through the Tesla app. Using Ford plug and charge will just give you the standard pricing.
It’s basically the same as any other service. You have to use the app from that company. No plug and charge option available.
You might have to turn off plug and charge for the Tesla network. Just guessing, but it seems necessary.
I managed my setup on the Tesla app before my road trip. I didn’t mess with Ford settings at all. It ended up being cheaper, even with the subscription! I canceled it after getting back home and saved more than what I spent on the subscription since EVgo / EA was $0.50 most places!
- Download the Tesla app
- Subscribe to the membership through your phone
- Search for a supercharger on ABRP
- Head to the charger
- Open the Tesla app
- Find the Charger
- The app will locate the charger for you
- Click ‘Charge here’
- Select the charger you’re parked at and click start
- Connect the adapter to the cable, then plug it into the port
Easy as that! - Stop charging in the app when done
- Press the unlock button on the port while unlocking the adapter
- Remove the adapter and place the cable back where it belongs
Have a great day!
