Is eco mode really worth it for better mpg?

I just ran a quick test, drove for 30 minutes to the next town and back. It was mostly a 50mph highway, but I passed through a few small towns with some stop-and-go driving. I was really careful with my driving to try to stay in full electric mode as much as I could.

Has anyone else tried extended tests to see if ECO mode improves mileage?

I have had nothing good come from eco mode

I would like to hear more about this. I am curious the issues you have run into

Just worse gas mileage then when in normal mode. that’s all

Wish the truck had a ‘coast’ button to switch off the gas engine.

Maybe it’s just mine, but my truck has been pretty good about switching over if I’m coasting or even on a slight downgrade. Or as you probably know, just give the brakes a soft tap and it changes over

@Alston
Double tap the brakes

Really? I’ll have to try that tomorrow and see

The feedback I got from the vehicle, it felt way more responsive on Normal mode and was easier to get it to go full electric and keep it there. ECO was actually hard to get into full electric.

Best to leave it in the normal mode. Never saw any real benefit from eco mode

I’ve never gotten any better mileage in Eco with either my 23 PB or my old 18 2.7. It’s not at all fun to drive in Eco. I would put up with that lack of fun if I magically got significantly better mileage.

@Sawyer
Good to know. I agree driving in ECO feels terrible.

I haven’t noticed a mileage difference with eco mode vs normal over many tanks of fuel, but I do like to set it there for when my wife drives. Eco definitely dampens throttle response, preventing the jerky acceleration that she subjects me to. I also wish that you could set default modes other than normal. This has annoyed me since my 2018 and I just don’t see any reason for them to not let the owner decide what their favorite driving mode is. I’m a bit sour over the many little things that are either glitchy or just plain unnecessary in my 24 PB. Top ones that come to mind: 1. Radio that keeps playing after I shut the truck off and open the door, 2. Seat belt minder that tells me that my seat belt IS buckled, 3. Drive mode reset at every start, 4. Android auto takes over and plays what I had on my phone even though I was listening to the radio when I last turned off the truck, 5. No total electric miles display on the center display (always shows zero, 6. (ACTUALLY #1, but not reordering now) back up warning that I can’t shut off when I need to quietly back into my house to avoid bothering sleeping family…and many more annoyances. I’m going to look very hard at Dodge and Chevy for next truck because of these little daily annoyances.

I ran a full tank on eco mode. Next tank on normal mode. I’ve stayed in normal since. 1.5 better mpg in normal and changing the mode every time got old fast.

Which year? I found recently that on the 21+ whatever mode you were in before cutting it off, it asks on the dash if you want to stay in the prior driving mode by pressing ok on the steering wheel button.

I’m interested in this question as well.

Since my last performance update my mpg’s have gone down. Was averaging 23 now 20. ECO mode and driving into brisk headwind drops mpg below 20.

Never gotten better in eco.
