Is the 2.7 L engine really a good choice

I really like the style and color of this truck and wanted to know if there are any known issues with the engine or the truck itself. I test drove it and I’m almost sold but I wanted to get some more info here. The Carfax looks great and it has only had one owner, with 90,000 miles on it.

This is probably the most reliable option in a newer F150

It’s a solid engine. The 2017 model has a very reliable 6-speed transmission. Good luck with your choice

I have 146,000 miles on my 2017 2.7 Ecoboost FX4 and haven’t faced a single problem. Would totally recommend it

It’s very solid

I have 166,000 miles on mine, mostly towing a 5,000 lb trailer. It has never let me down

That’s great to hear

The 2018 and newer 2.7 models have significant updates to fix earlier issues

But the dreaded 10-speed comes with it, which has its own problems. Plus, I haven’t seen complaints from first gen 2.7 owners that aren’t just made up on the internet

@Luca
Carbon buildup was a major concern (like with all direct injection engines), so Ford added six more port fuel injectors. I just hit 100K miles on my 2018 2.7 and have faced no issues with the engine or transmission

@Beck
I’m about to cross 147K miles on my 2017. It still runs smooth and has the same power as when it was new. Here’s to hoping we both have long-lasting trucks. Cheers

I suggest searching this forum for the 2.7L engine. You’ll find lots of good information that can likely answer your questions about it. It’s known to be one of Ford’s most reliable engines

Yes, but the 10-speed transmission has its issues. Ford replaced my 10-speed at 75,000 miles under warranty for $8,500

Good thing this one has a 6R80 transmission

I could be wrong, but I thought the 2017 2.7 and 3.5 models had the 10-speed

@Phoenix
Yeah, it’s confusing, but only the 3.5 had it in 2017; all of them got it for 2018 model year

Ah, I thought both had it. Strange how they did that

Once tuned, the 2.7 is a beast of an engine. They don’t have as many issues with phasers and chains compared to the 3.5 engines of the same generation

Yes, it’s probably one of the best engines Ford has. I work at a Ford service department and rarely see problems, just the usual open pan gasket leaks. The transmission choice matters; the 10-speed has problems. But you will love this truck. Just save some money for the transmission if you choose the 10-speed

It’s a fantastic engine. I prefer it much more than the 3.5
