Hey everyone, I’m planning to buy an F150 within the next year or so, and I’m torn between the 5.0 and 2.7 engines. I can’t afford a brand new one, so I’m looking for a low-mileage used one, probably between 2013-2020.
What year models should I avoid? Or which ones have been known to be reliable? I’m looking for a crew cab, short wheelbase 4x4. A King Ranch would be a dream, but it’s not a dealbreaker if I don’t get one.
Right now, I have a 2014 Tacoma TRD Off-road that I absolutely love, but with two car seats in the back, I need something bigger. If anyone’s interested in a spotless Tacoma that’s lived its whole life in the South, it’ll be for sale soon.
All the years you’re looking at are generally good, though some have more issues than others. I’ll break it down for the 2.7 and 5.0.
The 2.7 from 2013 to 2017 (first gen) had some oil pan gasket issues and occasional cam phaser problems. Nothing too crazy, but it’s worth being aware of. They had a 6-speed transmission, which is solid. A warranty for peace of mind would be a good idea.
The 2.7 from 2018 to now is regarded as one of the most reliable engines currently. They fixed the gasket issue, and no major problems are regularly reported like with the 3.5. The 10-speed transmission might give you some issues, though—some people have no problems, but others have had to get specific fixes. Again, a warranty is recommended.
For the 5.0, 2013-2017 are great years, especially with the 6-speed transmission. The aluminum body started in 2015. The 2018-2020 5.0s are known to burn oil, and it’s a common enough issue that you should expect it if you go for these years.
I’d recommend looking at 2015 and later. I think the 10-speed transmission started in 2017 or 2018. There was also a frontal impact difference starting in 2016, with some frame improvements that made the truck safer in head-on collisions. Just something to keep in mind.
I’ve got a 2017 2.7 with the 6-speed, and it’s been great. 82k miles with nothing but gas and routine maintenance. Getting about 22-24 mpg, at least according to the truck’s meter.
2020 F150s with the 5.0 are solid. The 10-speed transmission issues are overblown. When you build so many trucks, even a small percentage of issues looks like a lot. The key is how well the vehicle was maintained.
@Dale
In my opinion, no, they’re not as well built. They’ve had trouble with the transmissions, and the newer 5.0 engines are more likely to blow up. The interiors feel cheaper too, and the instrument cluster looks like it was designed by a kid.
Also, multiple dealers have told me to stay away from the aluminum bodies.
I’ve got a 2014 Blackout Special, and I love it. Mileage is decent, and it feels way more solid than the newer ones.
Hahaha, exactly! I’m getting about 14.2 mpg with my 5.0, so I’m happy. Expensive to fill up, but I only fill up once a month. RIP to city gas mileage though, on both engines!
