New truck and already an oil leak

I bought this truck last Wednesday. It was a demo vehicle the sales manager had been driving and had 1,800 miles on it. I thought I got a pretty good deal, but almost right away, I noticed oil in my driveway (I work 12-hour shifts, so I didn’t catch it until my first day off). Took it back to the dealer, and they said the rear main seal needs to be replaced—so frustrating! At least they’re fixing it, but I was hoping to share a “new truck day” post, not vent about problems with what’s basically a new truck.

Man, that’s rough to deal with on a brand new ride. Hope it’s an easy fix.

Really sorry to hear that. What engine are you running?

It’s the 2.7.

I had a 2017 with the 2.7. Worst vehicle I ever owned. The plastic oil pan was the issue, and after three replacements, they had to drop a short block in it. Never got it right. Traded it for a 3.5, and it’s been great. Good luck with yours!

@Zoran
That’s wild. I’ve got a 2016 2.7, and it’s been the best truck I’ve owned. Sorry yours gave you so much trouble.

Yeah, it happens. Loved the engine’s power and mileage, but I just got unlucky. My 3.5 has been solid so far.

@Zoran
Glad the 3.5 is working out for you. I know the feeling; I’ve had my share of duds too. Dodge never worked out for me, but some people swear by them.

Same here! Got a 2017 STX with the 2.7, and it’s been rock solid. I’ll have it paid off in a few months with only 67,000 miles. Planning to keep it for years.

Who thought a plastic oil pan was a good idea? Like seriously, who signed off on that?

It’s actually more common than you’d think. Been resealing those on big rigs for years.

@Nico
Wow, didn’t know that. Thanks for the info!

No problem! Just be prepared; they still leak sometimes.

Better it happens now while it’s under warranty than down the road. Hope they get it sorted quickly!

You’d expect a leaky rear main on an old beater, not something brand new.

Every time I hop in my new truck, I think about all the horror stories people share here. Makes me nervous about what could go wrong.

That sucks, but at least it’s a fixable issue and under warranty. Could be worse—imagine waiting months for a replacement part.

That’s frustrating, but it’s good your dealer seems to be handling it well. I had a Tacoma years ago, and dealing with the dealership was a nightmare. Sounds like you lucked out in that regard.

Could it have been overfilled? Seems weird for a new truck to leak like that.
