I’ve seen a lot of negative comments about this engine but never any positives. Every auto maker seems to have issues. Can someone convince me if I should buy the 2022 Ford F-150 with the 3.5L engine or not?
The 3.5 is a fantastic engine. It provides more torque, better fuel efficiency, and improved towing capacity. The 5.0 could have lower maintenance costs and higher long-term reliability. After driving both, the 3.5 feels much more lively and has better low-end torque.
Fuel economy between both is quite similar. If you’re frequently towing heavy loads on the highway, I’d recommend going for the V8. Otherwise, the V6 is the better choice.
If you do a lot of towing, the 3.5 or powerboost are unbeatable. I tow a 6500 lb landscaping trailer almost every day from March to October. I’ve borrowed my dad’s 5.0 and my brother’s 6.2 Chevy before. The 3.5 really outperforms both of those when towing.
I’ve had two 3.5s and the only upgrade I’d consider is switching to a Powerstroke.
You should definitely get it! They’ve invested a lot in research and development for the 3.5. I’ve had both engines before, and I’m planning on keeping this truck for a long time! I bought a 22 XLT 302A with the 3.5, and it’s so much more enjoyable to drive compared to the 5.0. Try to find a certified pre-owned model like I did, that way you’ll have warranty coverage for a few years after paying off the truck.
I have 251,000 miles on my 2014 F-150 and had zero issues.
My 2015 3.5 EcoBoost is doing great with 270,000 kilometers so far, and I’m aiming for a million!
I own one and love its performance, but I’ve encountered a rattle that makes me a bit anxious. In hindsight, I think I would go with the 5.0 since I don’t tow anything.
I just reached 204,000 miles on my truck (3.5 EcoBoost). My first major repair was at 203,000 (turbos replaced) but other than that, it’s been flawless. It’s the best truck I’ve owned, and I’ve had quite a few.
I’m on my second 3.5L. I loved the first one and this new one is a 2023 Platinum. It idles really rough for some reason. I’ve taken it to the shop three times but they can’t diagnose it unless it ‘throws a code.’ The performance is still excellent, though. I’m considering a Ford performance tune to help with the idle issue.

Are you using full synthetic oil?

No, I’m using regular oil. Should I switch?
I worked at a Ford dealership for 5 years and have seen the border patrol drive hard, pushing 270,000 miles without major issues. I’d choose the 3.5 any day! But if you’re using a 3.5 and not running full synthetic oil, you’re hurting your truck. Change your oil every 5,000 miles with full synthetic. The border patrol uses Royal Purple and changes the filter every 5,000 miles, doing the oil yearly. If you’re racking up miles, that’s a good plan. For standard driving, regular synthetic is fine. Just remember to cool down the turbos before shutting off your engine.
The 5.0 has cam phasers too, so that’s not a plus. Both engines require oil to the cam phasers from small lines built into the heads. If you’re not using full synthetic, these lines can clog up with sludge, affecting the cam phaser’s oil flow, leading to noisy performance. If this happens, it’s due to not using full synthetic oil or changing it on time—full synthetic has way more detergents than regular oil.

Thank you for the info. The opinions seem all over the place. Who knows how everyone is taking care of their trucks.
I have the 3.5, and if I didn’t need the extra towing capacity, I’d go for the 5.0. My cam phasers are failing, so that might be affecting my view.

What mileage and year are you at?
@Nash
2017 with 95,000 miles.

I think the cam phaser issue is unacceptable without a recall in my opinion.

I agree with you.
Consider buying a 2023 and a half or later. Most of the problems from previous years have been addressed.

The 21 models have improved engines. The 23.5 might have updated transmission parts. I own a 21.
