Solar battery charging

@Logan
Looks like he used a charged power station that fed into the truck. The solar couldn’t keep up with that load alone.

If you position the generator and panel right, it costs less than relying on the grid. Plus, it’d be great for road trips!

@Ellison
Or put panels on your house with a battery setup instead. Better for steady power.

Why not use the truck battery instead?

If you’re out and need power, a house setup keeps things going.

@Ellison
But a $1,100 system gives you maybe 7¢ of power a day. Not exactly a money-saver.

True, the math makes sense :joy:

Panels alone are cheaper, but the battery adds a lot to the cost.

Residential solar panels cost around $0.30 per watt. Bigger setups can offset costs way better.

Electric costs me 28 cents.

That’s still cheaper than my rate.

@Ellison
Standalone solar systems cost more per kWh than utility rates.

@Ellison
With max solar output, you’d only get a few miles per day.

Did you check how fast it charges with solar?

Got about 1 kWh in an hour.

Better than zero though!

Explain how 400W of solar adds 1 kWh in an hour?

Not much worse than a regular home charger!

That’s actually not physically possible.

That’s about what a wall outlet gives, so not bad.

No way you got 1 kWh from that setup.

@Johnstone
Even best-case scenario, it’d still only add a few miles per day.
