Tesla sent me a Cybertruck deal... No thanks, I'll stick with my Lightning

Got an email today from Tesla about a ‘special offer’ on a Cybertruck lease. They want $7,500 down and $750 a month for 3 years with a 10,000-mile limit per year. After waiting 5 years for this thing, I realize now that I don’t even want it. I could lease another Lightning for less. Tesla just isn’t competing well anymore. After all these years thinking I wanted a Cybertruck, turns out what I really wanted was a Ford Lightning. Appreciate it, Ford!

$750 a month… Wait till folks realize how much insurance adds to that bill.

Yeah, I checked with my insurance and adding a Cybertruck more than doubles my current rate. Right now, I pay about $1,100 a year for my Lightning. The Cybertruck? An extra $2,905 per year. That alone makes the lease cost jump to about $900 a month. When you do the math, it makes zero sense financially. My Lightning lets me drive 15,000 miles per year, while the Cybertruck limits me to 10,000. I also put down $8,500 for my Lightning lease, while Tesla wants $7,500 and doesn’t even include a home charger. No thanks.

@Tian
So you’re telling me for way less than what just the Cybertruck’s insurance costs, you could get a fully loaded Lightning with extras? That really puts things into perspective.

Yeah, and on top of that, people seem to love beating up on Tesla batteries in those YouTube torture tests. I wouldn’t want to buy a used one after seeing all that. Even if the Cybertruck were $50k, I still think I’d prefer my Lightning. I actually test-drove a Cybertruck, and I wasn’t impressed.

@Tian
Most people don’t think about money when they get a new car.

If you cared about money, you wouldn’t buy a new car at all.

People talk about literacy all the time, but no one ever mentions how bad people are at math. There are more people who struggle with numbers than reading, and it keeps them broke.

@Tian
It’s not even a reading problem. Most people just don’t bother to sit down and do the math before making a big financial decision like this. They just see a shiny new toy and jump in without thinking.

@Tian
Just wait until insurance companies react when Tesla rolls out their full self-driving later this year. Prices are gonna skyrocket.

Yeah, and Musk will probably just sue them like he does with everything else.

@Tian
Your Lightning probably won’t have panels falling off. Can’t say the same for the Cybertruck. :joy:

If you count the down payment, it’s actually $958 a month!

I’m paying $3,900 for 6 months of insurance on my Lightning… because Florida.

I’m in Texas, paying $1,100 a year. I’d be terrified if my insurance was that high.

I don’t get why some people’s Lightning insurance is crazy high. I’m in Florida too and only pay about $1,200 a year with full coverage.

Damn. I thought my $540 for 6 months was bad.

And imagine the hit on resale value if you buy one at these crazy markups. A guy in my neighborhood is already talking about a $50k loss in the first year because he paid over MSRP.

@Adrian
Yeah, depreciation on Teslas is brutal. If you’re buying a Cybertruck, you better be in it for the long haul, because resale is looking rough.

Tesla says $750 a month, but that’s not including the down payment. The actual cost is way more.
