Thinking about changing the muffler on my 2019 FX4 XLT… advice?

I’m looking to replace the stock muffler on my 2019 FX4 XLT SuperCrew. I’m not super knowledgeable about vehicles, so any guidance on what size inlet and outlet I should be looking for would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

What engine does it have? And are you looking to replace the muffler because it’s broken, or are you after more sound or performance?

It’s the 3.5 EcoBoost. Mostly looking for a bit more sound, but nothing too loud. Was considering the Borla Pro XS.

@Dustin
The 3.5 doesn’t sound great with just a muffler swap, even with a good setup, it can sound kind of like a tractor. I have the Borla Touring cat-back system on mine, but only got it because it was a steal at $540.

Honestly, you might get better results by putting the money toward a tune and intercooler instead. You’d get a big power boost and keep it relatively quiet. A 3.5 can hit 12s in the quarter-mile with just a 93 tune and an intercooler—really fast for a daily truck!

If you want a bit of sound, maybe try an intake kit and vent the bypass valve to the atmosphere. You’d get some nice induction and blow-off sounds without changing the exhaust.

@Lex
Would just changing the muffler, with everything else stock, still sound bad?

Yeah, unfortunately, it likely would. The stock muffler is designed to keep the sound decent, so without it, it can get pretty rough.

I put a 4” cat-back on my 3.5, and it sounds good. Even had some 5.0 truck owners compliment it.

Which brand did you go with?

MBRP and Borla are probably your best bets for sound quality. Like the other guy mentioned, a lot of setups can end up sounding pretty bad.
