I took my 2015 EcoBoost to the local Ford service center. They did a diagnostic and said it’s actually the waste gates causing the issue, not the cam phasers (service estimate below). My question is, is this an easy fix? I have some mechanic family members, but they’re not Ford experts. Should I have Ford do the repair, or is it something I can handle? And is this a serious issue that needs to be fixed ASAP?
A brand new set of turbos costs almost that much.

Got it, thanks!
Try putting springs on them. The wastegates can get a little slack over time, some faster than others. I can’t remember the exact part number, but a quick Google search should help. It’s a double hook spring that connects the wastegate arm and the turbo housing to take up the slack. They can wear out with heat, but for about 30 bucks, it’s an easy fix.

Thanks a lot, I appreciate it!

Do you have more info on this? I’d like to try it myself and share how the repair went.

Check out the comment from officermaxgains a bit further down. He mentions a video that’s similar to what I’m talking about. I used a stronger spring than the one in the video, but it should have the same result .
I have a 2017 2.7L EcoBoost with 144k miles. I’ve been hearing the rattle for as long as I can remember, especially on cool mornings. It doesn’t bother me anymore and hasn’t affected performance. I’m just going to keep running it until it becomes more than just a noise. Haha.
@Sam
I’m definitely thinking about riding it out too, but I’m being a little cautious since I’m new to these EcoBoosts.
How many miles are on your truck? I have a 2020 with 54k miles, and I get a slight rattle, but it’s not as bad as what you’re describing. It seems like it’s just a bad wastegate design that’s only fixable with aftermarket turbos.
@Hayes
I’m at about 107,000 miles.

Thanks for the info!
@Hayes
It could still be the cam phasers if it only happens on startup. This typically starts happening around 60,000 miles. Good news is that Ford covers it through the Customer Satisfaction Program if your truck is under 69,000 miles, even if you’re out of warranty. But either way, riding it out isn’t a great idea since it can get worse and cause more issues later.
The waste gates on my truck started rattling at 80k miles. I found this video… https://youtu.be/mysU2DQZkLA?feature=shared
I’ve had those springs in for almost 2 years now and haven’t had any issues.
@San
Thanks, I’ll check it out!
