$ to insure your Lightning

How much are you paying to insure your Lightning?

I am in MD (lowly dense suburb with low crime rate) and just got quoted by USAA (57 year old married been with them 28 years with 1 claim for stolen Catalytic converter on a Prius, no tickets in last 10 years) and got quoted $1150 for 6 months for a Lariat for 8000 miles/year, $300 deductible for comprehensive, $500 deductible for collisions. $1050 for a Flash every 6 months. Truthfully I am a little shocked because I am paying about half to insure a Rav4 Prime and $300 less for a Honda Pilot (both are cheaper vehicles but not that much less).

Want to know if USAA is F’ing me (which they have been since raise my rates steeply in last few years because they are losing their shit insuring CA, FL, TX, etc…). Excuse my language but last time I had second thought buying a car was when I was in my 20’s so to say I am perturbed is an understatement.

Up your deductibles. $300 is really low. I personally have mine at a $1,000.

USAA rates are getting bad. Try Erie!

Thanks everyone for your #. Just tried Progressive and their coverage is already $1300 less than USAA to cover my current 5 cars, and adding a Lightning would only +$350/6month. If I bundle 1 home policy it’s $1500 less than USAA. I will try State Farm and Erie.

I am so disappointed with USAA right now considering I have been loyal for 28 years and passed them onto my children. All the cars I have insured as well as 5 properties and umbrella policy. I probably could have bought a Platinum or 2 with the extra cash I paid to USAA.

@Stormy
I was with USAA from 2004 to 2019 and I think when you’re a long-termer they (USAA and probably other insurance companies too, who knows) must put you in the “ain’t goin’ nowhere” category and it’s open season on raising rates. My auto insurance kept going up and without having claims, and my homeowners insurance started at $750 per year in 2005 and was $2,150 per year when I left in 2019, and that was with zero claims.

So I was going to suggest shopping around but I see you’ve already started doing that, good luck!

@Stormy
I was with USAA for 9 years in the military and a few after. Eventually their rates went up and up for no reason and I finally shopped around- GEICO was significantly cheaper and I’ve had no problems for years now. Home insurance was also much cheaper elsewhere. I don’t use USAA for anything anymore.

@Stormy
It doesn’t pay to be loyal to any insurance company, I hop back and forth from progressive and GEICO about every 18 months

@Stormy
Was finna say, wowza! That USAA rate is bogus, and glad you broke free of them.
Always upset me when I had customers coming in with USAA checks for their vehicle purchases, the silliness with the draft checks they can play and being so adamant they’re the best when it comes to insurance coverage. They may have been great at one point, but as of late they seem like they’re in it just to reap profits more than the next guy.

We went with State Farm personally, coming from Foremost/Farmers and the savings was night and day for better coverage.

@Stormy
Be careful with Progressive. The rate they typically quote is an introductory rate and will be as high or higher after 6 months. Be sure to check so you don’t end up with an unwelcome surprise on first renewal.

I left USAA when my daughter got her permit and they wanted triple my rate to have her on there. Progressive was less even after adding her.

That’s my plan, too. USAA isn’t cheap, but I used to be okay paying a small premium knowing the service was good. But even the service isn’t that great any more. I’ve heard the horror stories about what USAA does to your premiums when adding a kid, so when my daughter gets her license in a little over a year, I’m probably jumping to somewhere like Progressive myself.

too many variables (homeowners discounts, occupation discounts, driving record, age, zip code, drives on policy, etc) but just get some additional quotes from other companies and if they are around the same ballpark then that is your states rate and your paying the average cost. It is possible that USAA pricing EVs higher because the high repair cost and pushing clients to shop it and go elsewhere. So, like I said, get some additional quotes and you will know if your getting shafted or not.

For reference in CA and have Travelers for all personal policies. I’m paying $770 per 6 months for my 2023 Lariat but I have multiple vehicles on policy, homeowners and umbrella discounts, 250k/500k limits with $500 deductibles. I’m in my 40s and have had no accidents on violations in the past 7 years.

PA here, honda odyssey, ford lightning lariat and home insurance. i pay 180 a month for both vehicles. state farm. shop around. usaa is a good insurance but definitely not competitive when it comes to pricing.

@Blaise
In Kansas, I was quoted $1050 for 6 months on a Lariat from USAA. I have similar demographics as OP. So far I have elected not to pursue the Lightning based on need vs want. The Tesla I would be trading in is $745 for 6 months with USAA (Base Model 3).

In central NC, my lightning is $1,600 a year - but that’s because it’s my business vehicle and I have to have $1m coverage.

2023 platinum 1218 per year 500 / 1000 deductible. Erie

My USAA rate on my 2022 Lightning XLT is $873 for 6 months.

I’m paying 87 a month in Wyoming with Progressive full coverage.

Doesn’t seem bad for me. I have multi policy, good driver, preferred payment discounts. My insurance charges all trims as a platinum, which is annoying, and I’m in my late 20s. I pay $1277 for 6 months. I previously paid $470 for my 2012 F150. I have $1000 deductibles.

My lightning is insured with USAA for $670 @ 6 months. 500 Deductible.
I live in Hawaii.
