Towing a 12x6 Dump Trailer with a 2024 F-150 Lightning ER

I have a 2024 F-150 Lightning Extended Range with a GVWR of 8550. Can I safely tow a 12x6 dump trailer?

I’m picking it up 75 miles away. The trailer weight is between 2700-3000 pounds with a GVWR of 9899.

My truck (lightweight ER Lariat) weighs around 6500 pounds. Adding the trailer’s 3000 pounds would put me around 9500 pounds, exceeding the 8550 GVWR on my truck’s sticker.

I plan to use the trailer to haul junk from my garage to a dump yard 8 miles away after I get it 75 miles away. Thanks!

The Lariat’s towing capacity is 7700 lbs. If you have the max tow package, it’s 10k lbs.

Since the trailer’s dry weight is 2700-3000 lbs, you’re within the towing capacity.

The towing capacity is 5,000-10,000 lbs depending on your packages. I’ve towed a dump trailer with 2 yards of gravel (total weight over 6000 lbs), and it pulls fine, but you feel it, and you have longer stopping distances and slower turning. The Lightning’s mass and torque make it tow better than a regular half-ton truck.

Expect the range to be significantly reduced with a trailer, even an empty one. You might lose about half your range.

Thanks, brother. Just wanted to make sure it’s safe and won’t strain my truck. I previously towed a 6x12 utility trailer with a commercial zero-turn mower, and it pulled great. I’m excited about this new purchase and hope it helps me clear out my garage this year!

You’re well within spec. Just note that Ford technically recommends a Weight Distributing Hitch for anything over 6,000 lbs, I believe.

You’re well within spec. You may not even feel it when you’re towing.

I towed a dump trailer plus 3 yards of crushed concrete… probably over towing capacity since I don’t have max tow, but it was fine.

Thanks again, guys. I was able to drive it home safely. With the dump trailer attached, the estimated 80% charged 240-mile range dropped to 150.

GVWR is the load on the truck and doesn’t include the entire weight of the trailer.

You would only be adding the tongue weight, which is usually 10% or about 300 lbs.
