Triton years to avoid

Hey everyone,

I have been searching for a used Ford truck to buy, but I’m worried about the horror stories regarding cam phasers and spark plugs breaking. I really love the look of the late '90s and early 2000s F-150s, but I’m unsure which years of the Triton engines are problematic. I’ve heard different opinions—my mechanic, who used to work for Ford, says all Tritons are bad and should be avoided completely, but others have said the late '90s and early 2000s models were solid until around 2004 when things went downhill.

So, what should I do? Which years should I steer clear of?

Thanks for reading, everyone!

The Triton engine, used in Ford F-150s from 1997 to 2010, has a reputation for its power and durability. However, like all engines, it has its share of known issues.

Before making your ultimate decision, here are some few key points to consider.

  1. Safe Bets: 1997-2003 F-150s with 4.6L or 5.4L Triton engines are generally reliable if spark plugs have been properly maintained.

  2. Avoid: 2004-2008 models, having 3-valve 5.4L Triton engines because of cam phaser failures and tricky spark plug issues.

You may consider sticking to pre-2004 models, thereby avoiding high-mileage 2004-2008 trucks unless with documented repairs.
