What are your RPMs at idle?

I recently got a 2021 XLT with the EcoBoost 3.5 engine, and my idle RPMs are around 600, which feels a bit rough. Is this normal?

When I start the truck, it idles smoothly at about 1,000 RPM, but within twenty seconds, it drops to around 600 RPM and stays steady without fluctuating. The truck drives great otherwise.

I’m trying to figure out if this is something to be concerned about or just a typical characteristic for Ford. My Toyota maintained a consistent 1,000 RPM with a very smooth idle.

I have a 2011 F-150 with a 5.0L engine. It idles at 500 RPM, and it worries me when it goes any lower than that.

Normal engines start with high RPMs to warm up quickly, then idle at a lower speed. It sounds like your Toyota had a problem.

My 2023 PowerBoost idles at 1100 RPMs when Eco Idle is on. Sometimes it’s lower, around 900-1000 RPMs, but usually it’s at 1100.

The 3.5 engine’s idle is a bit rough, which made me think there was something wrong with it. Turns out that’s normal. I actually prefer when the auto stop-start kicks in at lights because it’s smoother than idling. Overall, I really like the 3.5 engine.

650 is the setpoint in the tune for a warmed up engine.
