Why does CarPlay sound keep messing up in my truck?

This has been so frustrating for me. Almost half the time I get in my truck, the sound doesn’t work with CarPlay.

I have to turn Wi-Fi on, resync everything, and then it starts working again.

It’s especially annoying when I’m on a call, and I have to scramble to switch the audio back to my phone.

How is this still a problem?

When this happens to me, I just activate Siri and then cancel her. That seems to fix it most of the time.

I’m using beta 18.2 right now, and I can say it doesn’t happen as often anymore. It still happens sometimes, though.

Try switching to a different audio source and then back to CarPlay. Sometimes muting and unmuting works too.

I use Android Auto, and it happens to me as well, but it seems like Apple CarPlay has this issue more often.

Yeah, I’ve had to disconnect my phone from CarPlay and then reconnect. Doesn’t really solve your problem, but just letting you know I’ve dealt with it too.

This happened all the time with me. I had to go to the phone list in the settings, turn CarPlay off, then turn it back on. After that, I’d have to rewind my audiobook about 30 seconds.

When I upgraded to the iPhone 16 Pro, it started working perfectly. Makes me think it’s more of an Apple problem than Ford.

@Clayton
I upgraded from a 14 Pro to a 16 Pro, and it still happens to me pretty often.

My wife also has this problem with her Mach-E.

The fastest way I’ve found to fix it is to reset SYNC by holding the volume down and track forward buttons at the same time. It’s quicker than messing with menus on the touchscreen.

This seems to be an Apple issue. I’ve had the same problem with my Subaru and GMC even before CarPlay was a thing.

It annoyed me so much that I turned CarPlay off completely. I just use the built-in system now. It’s not great, but at least it works consistently.

When this happens, I turn Bluetooth and Wi-Fi off on my phone and then turn them back on. It’s frustrating, but it works.

Has anyone else had this issue when using a USB cable? I assume it’s the same problem, but I haven’t tested it.

Wireless CarPlay just doesn’t seem very reliable. I wish there were an option to use wired CarPlay instead.

I don’t think it’s an Apple problem. This is the only car I’ve had that does this. I’ve used a couple of different phones since I bought the truck, and it happens with all of them, whether it’s iOS 17 or 18.

It seems to happen more when I’m near the truck but not getting in right away. Like if I load something in the back or unlock the truck and go back into the house before leaving.

Mine has never worked properly. I just gave up on it.

This happens to me several times a week. It’s really annoying.

This seems to be a Ford problem. I’ve had this issue on both my Lightning and my MME, but I haven’t seen it with my GMC, Kia, or Toyota.

When no sound works, I do a soft restart on the SYNC system. Just press and hold the volume down and next track buttons on the steering wheel until the Ford logo comes up on the screen. It’s much easier than digging through the settings. After the restart, check your volume too, just in case.

What’s strange is that this hasn’t happened to me yet. I wonder if it’s more common on the Lariat models compared to the XLT ones, since they have slightly different SYNC systems.

I’ve got a 2023 XLT, and CarPlay audio has worked fine so far.
