1995 F150 died while running and won't start… what could it be?

My 1995 F150 with the 4.9L inline and manual transmission suddenly died while running and now won’t restart. I’m pulling OBD1 KOEO codes 116, 114, and 522. I tried switching between the gas tanks, but that didn’t help. It cranks over but won’t fire. I replaced the ignition coil, but that didn’t fix it. Any ideas on what else to check?

Those codes are for the ACT, ECT sensors, and the clutch pedal not being pressed during testing, so they’re probably unrelated. If you’re not getting spark and already replaced the coil, the most likely issue is the TFI module on the distributor. You can test it: use a test light between the positive battery terminal and the 12-volt negative side of the coil connector, then crank the engine. If the light doesn’t pulse, the TFI is probably bad. Also, check if the rotor spins when cranking—it might be a stripped distributor gear.

Thanks! I’ll try this and see what happens.

When you replace the TFI module, you’ll need a special socket. The parts store should have one—it’s a deep 7/32 if I’m remembering right.

I agree with this—sounds like it could be the TFI module.

Have you tried starting it with starter fluid sprayed into the intake? If that works, it could be the PIP sensor in the distributor. I had to replace mine once, and honestly, I’d never do it again without a press. If it’s the PIP, just buy a whole new distributor—it’s easier.

@Merritt
Good suggestion, I’ll test that out tomorrow. Thanks!
