I’m looking to buy my son a used 2015+ F150, CCSB (6-1/2 bed), 4x4, with the 5.0 engine. He’s finishing up his last year of high school, so I need the truck to last him at least another 60,000 miles through 4 years of college.

What are the best model years to consider? What kind of mileage can I expect the 5.0 engines to last? Are there any common issues I should be aware of or avoid?

  • 2015-2017 Models: These are the first ones with the new aluminum body, which is lighter and usually gets better gas mileage. The 5.0L engine in these trucks is pretty reliable, but the early models did have some minor issues, mainly with electronics and a few drivetrain parts.
  • 2018+ Models: Ford made some upgrades starting in 2018. These trucks have better infotainment systems, improved safety features, and generally more refined tech. The 5.0L engine in these years is still strong and has fewer issues than the older models. :wink:

just bought a 2020 5.0. I wanted the 5.0 reliability with the acceleration and fuel economy of the 10 speed, but without the cylinder deactivation of the 21+. I love the truck so far. I’m sure the 10 speed has its flaws, but it doesn’t deserve the hate it gets.
