Ford truck sending 210MB of data after a road trip… what’s in there?

Just got back from a 3500-mile road trip over 12 days. As soon as my truck connected to my home Wi-Fi, it uploaded 210MB of data to Ford.

Has Ford ever shared what exactly this data includes? And more importantly, how much of it is personal info?

Hey, I recognize that setup!

Haha, looks like I’m not the only one. I’ll probably upload around 400MB this month… seems like the road trip added a lot more data.

@Sky
How do I find this info on my own setup?

That screenshot is from a firewall called ‘Firewalla’ on the home network.

Hey, another Firewalla user here!

Nice! Gotta love what Firewalla can do.

Note to self: check how much data I’ve been sending to Ford over the past few years. Bet it’s a ton.

Do you use BlueCruise on your truck?

Yep, use it all the time. Could be part of the reason for all that data.

Honestly, it could be anything. You’ve probably agreed to let them upload all kinds of stuff. You can turn it off, but then you’ll lose some app features.

Yeah, I’m mostly okay with it… mostly. Ford did say years ago that they were going to be very data-focused. Maybe they’re using the data for AI training? Feels like there might be more than just basic info in those uploads.

@Delaney
Good point. If it’s waiting for Wi-Fi to upload the road trip data and includes all the vehicle sensors, it could easily add up to 250MB. My home automation system logs around 3GB a month without audio, video, or images.

@Kim
Makes sense. The systems I work with are designed for minimal data usage, so 250MB seems big to me. One day, I might try reverse-engineering the Sync 4 system and see what I can find.

That’s probably true. I’d just like a bit more clarity on what’s being sent. Not complaining, just curious.

They don’t sell your data. Stop spreading rumors.

@Tory

They definitely are.

Maybe you should read the terms again.

You’d be surprised at what companies collect and sell: age, gender, browsing habits, political views, you name it. Even your internet provider does it.
