I'm considering buying my first Ford. What are the different transmission types available?

I’m looking to buy an F250 with the 7.3 gas engine. I’ve heard good things about the 6R140 transmission, but I can’t seem to figure out how to tell which transmission an F250 has when browsing listings.

A lot of the listings just say “6-speed” or “10-speed” but don’t specify the actual transmission model.

I know this might be a dumb question, but how can I tell if an F250 has the 6R140 trans?

The number before the “R” is the number of gears, and the number after the “R” is the torque rating.

  • 6R140 is a 6-speed, rated for 1400 newton-meters of torque.
  • 10R80 is a 10-speed, rated for 800 newton-meters of torque.
  • 10R140 is a 10-speed, rated for 1400 newton-meters of torque.

The current F250s have the 10R140, which they’ve been using since around 2020. Before the 6R140, there was the 5R110W 5-speed until 2011. So if you want the 6-speed, look for a model between 2011 and 2019.

But here’s the catch—the 7.3L gas engine was introduced in 2020, and all of them came with the 10-speed. So, if you want that engine, it’s going to come with the 10-speed transmission unless someone swapped it out.

@Grier
The 10R and 7.3L engine came out in 2020, and they’re standard with the 7.3L gas and the 6.7L diesel engines. The 6R was only available with the 6.2L engine in the F250 from 2020 to 2022. All 2023 and newer models have the 10R.

So, if you’re looking at 2019 and older, you won’t see the 10R. And if you want the 7.3, it’s going to come with the 10-speed.

@Grier
Thanks so much, this helps a lot! Looks like I’m going with the 10R140 then.

The 6R140 is the only 6-speed on an F250 from 2011 onward.

Pretty sure the 7.3L only comes with the 10-speed. It replaced the old 6.8L engine and sort of took over from the 6.2L too. But honestly, the 6.8L might not even be needed anymore.

If you’re going for the 7.3L gas engine, you’re getting the 10R behind it. I’ll be honest, I’m not a fan of the 10-speed, especially with the gas engines. Expect to replace the C/D/F drum early, before 75k miles. And don’t be surprised if you end up bringing it back to the dealership multiple times for complaints about shift points. Can you tell I’m a bit salty about these 10-speeds?

@Charlie
Wow, thanks for the heads-up. If you could go back, what would you choose instead?

I don’t own one myself; I actually work on them. I’ve got an older diesel with the 5R110. We’ve seen a lot of issues with the 10-speed transmissions across various models. Ford keeps trying to patch things up, but it usually ends with us doing a full rebuild.

@Charlie
That’s disappointing to hear. I was looking at the 7.3 because of its reputation for being reliable, but if the transmission is going to be a headache, that’s just a different problem to deal with.

@Harper
Yeah, the 7.3 is a solid engine. We’ve seen a few issues here and there, but that’s normal. It’s not going to keep up with the 6.7 diesel, but it’s a good choice if you don’t need a diesel, and it’s way cheaper to maintain.
