I would describe the 2016/2017 5.0 as having an aluminum body with improvements to prevent corrosion, featuring the late-model 6-speed transmission without issues found in the 10-speed, a tuned port 5.0 engine, and the updated Sync 3 infotainment system.

The 2011-2014 5.0s are reliable. From 2015 to 2017, the 5.0s are considered excellent. From 2018 to 2020, consider the 2.7L and 3.5L engines. The 2.7L may have an oil pan leak issue, while the 3.5L received a second-generation engine in 2017 that fixed previous issues. The main concern with the 3.5L is cam phasers, but Ford released a new part in 2021 to address this. Models from 2021 to 2024 reportedly have no cam phaser issues.

From 2018 to 2020, the 5.0L engines may have issues with oil consumption and plasma-lined cylinders. From 2021 to 2024, any of the three engine options are generally reliable. However, note that 2021 and newer 5.0L engines now have cylinder deactivation and a belt-driven oil pump. I believe the 2021 and newer 2.7L engines also have a belt-driven oil pump.

From 2011 to 2016, the 3.5L and 2.7L engines have a 6-speed transmission. From 2011 to 2017, the 5.0L engines also have a 6-speed transmission, which is durable except for the lead frame that may need replacement, a straightforward process if you have access to a lift and follow a guide like FordTechMakuloco’s video.

I recently purchased a 2020 5.0. I opted for the combination of reliability from the 5.0 engine with the acceleration and fuel efficiency of the 10-speed transmission, while avoiding the cylinder deactivation found in the 2021 and newer models. So far, I’m really enjoying the truck. While I’m aware that the 10-speed transmission may have its issues, I believe it’s often criticized unfairly.
