Lariat vs XLT Upgrade, Is it worth it?

Is it worth upgrading to the Lariat from the XLT? I guess it depends on what matters most to you, but how do owners of both enjoy their trucks? My lease ends in November, and I’m torn between the two.

Why not look at the Flash trim? It’s in between the two.

Yeah, the Flash was the right trim for me. I also got the ProPower for backup power to the house.

I’m not opposed to any of them.

Is the Pro the base model?

No more Pro variant for the new model year. The Flash is the extended-range version of the XLT with a powered tailgate and other similar features (for the '24 MY).

@Ren
It’s basically the rebadged XLT ET with the 312a Package, minus the 9.6kW ProPower, and includes the bigger screen and BlueCruise.

Yep, can’t forget the bigger screen if you’re into that.

I shopped both XLT and Lariat extended range. Price wasn’t an issue, but it really came down to what I cared about. I don’t like leather, didn’t care for the vertical screen, and I prefer physical buttons for climate control. Also, I had a rear window in my last truck and barely used it, and I didn’t need a moonroof. So, the XLT was perfect for me, and I got a slightly higher payload, which was more important.

@Dru
I miss having physical buttons, but Ford did a decent job keeping some. Plus, I mostly rely on CarPlay now, so it’s not too bad. But I can see why you’d prefer tactile controls.

Exactly this. The big screen isn’t as bad as others I’ve seen.

@Dru
Same here, exactly what I was thinking.

I’m happy with my XLT—it has everything I need. I do wish I had leather seats and a sliding rear window. The Lariat had nice features, but BlueCruise is subscription-based, and the monthly cost would’ve been about $150 more if I remember right.

@Zenith
You could always go for Catskinz seats.

I just got a quote—$1800 installed for my Ranger. It’s a better deal than upgrading to the Lariat. Waiting for Black Friday.

I bought a 2023 Lariat, and while the 2024 Flash has everything I was looking for, I got a good deal on the Lariat.

Personally, I don’t think the Lariat is worth the upgrade cost. Here’s why:

  • The cloth seats on the XLT are pretty nice.

  • I don’t like the giant tablet display on the Lariat/Platinum and prefer real knobs and buttons for HVAC and audio controls.

  • The stock XLT radio is fine for me. It could use a subwoofer, but you can add that later.

  • Don’t need a power liftgate, etc.

  • The Lariat trim + extended range adds about $20k more around here.

@Hartley
Seems fair. I mostly just drive to work and home, plus the occasional errand. We still have my wife’s car, too. Anyone here use their truck as a backup generator for the house?

There are a few ways to use the Lightning’s ProPower for home backup. The cheapest way is to install a transfer switch at your house and manually connect the truck to the house via the 30A/240V outlet in the bed. The expensive route involves the Ford Charge Station Pro (currently part of a promotion) and about $8k in additional Sunrun equipment and installation.

I personally opted for a standard standby generator that runs on regular fuel, rather than something dependent on Ford. When the truck’s juice runs out, I switch to my Honda generator for essentials like my well pump, fridge, and freezer.
