Picked up a 2024 Flash… Any tips on charging or features I should know about?

I got my new truck yesterday – it’s the Pro power and max tow version with 22k in incentives (x-plan, first responder, and all that). I’m looking for advice on third-party Level 2 chargers and how to hook up vehicle-to-home charging. I plan on putting in a 220 outlet in my garage to start charging.

Also, what cool features have you found that aren’t obvious right away?

I’ve been looking for 18 months, and with the current incentives and the risk of losing the tax credit, I decided to go for it. No regrets so far. I plan on tinting the front windows to match the rears and taking it easy on Electra (my son named it).

The Tesla Universal Charger is your best bet. It’s future-proof with both J1772 and NACS in one unit. I personally have one, and it’s been great. It’s handy, especially since I have family with Teslas who can use it when needed.

@Zuri
Exactly, that’s the right choice. It will work with your current truck and any future electric vehicles you get.

I’m using the Ford mobile charger for now until it gives out. My parents bought the battery tender EV charger from Costco for their Tesla and Volvo, and it’s worked amazingly well. I’ve used it when visiting them and it’s been pretty impressive.

Not sure what ‘gives up the ghost’ means?

It means when it breaks down completely!

It’s just a funny way of saying it dies. The ‘ghost’ leaving the body.

It’s like saying the thing is ‘pining for the fjords.’

Ah, that makes sense now.

It’s like saying ‘drive it until the wheels fall off.’

What was your final price on the truck?

It ended up being about $57k OTD. $51k without tax, title, and fees. I’ve seen some that were cheaper, but this worked for me and I feel like I got a good deal. I’m really happy with it.

There’s a great forum here for EV charging info. They have tons of details on EVSEs (chargers), wiring, and recommended products. One thing to keep in mind – if you use a plug-in charger instead of a hardwired one, make sure you use a commercial or EV-rated 14-50 receptacle. There are stories about cheap store-bought receptacles overheating and starting fires. They work for stoves and dryers, but not for the continuous load of EV charging.

Good luck, and welcome to the ‘club’!

@Joss
I plan on adding the 14-50 outlet tomorrow for my charger. I’ll use that for a while while I decide on which Level 2 charger to get.

If you’re upgrading your garage to support EV charging, you might be able to get some rebates when you file your taxes. I had to upgrade my main panel to 200A when I ran 100A 220V to my garage, but I got about 30% of the cost back. You’ll need IRS Form 8911 for that.

@Peyton
Luckily my panel is already 200A. I’ll be adding the NEMA 14-50 outlet this weekend.

@Peyton
I think those rebates are only for low-income or non-urban areas.

Didn’t realize that. I’m in a rural area that just got off the state’s distressed list, but it works out for me. Thanks for the heads-up!

I just got one too!! Congrats. XLT with standard battery. I work from home so it’s perfect. 0% for 72, 23k in incentives with xplan, gov rebates and ford rebates.
