Hey everyone, I’m considering a used 2016 F150 XLT 4WD with the 2.7L EcoBoost. The truck has 100k miles on the body, but the owner replaced the engine a few months ago with a used one that has 130k miles. He says it’s in good health and runs great. Is it a red flag to buy a truck with a replaced engine that has higher miles than the original? He’s asking $14.5k. Also, the owner is my wife’s ex-boyfriend, but I don’t know him very well. Thoughts?
Why would he replace the engine with one that has more miles? And he’s your wife’s ex-boyfriend? Yeah, I’d pass on this deal.

I wouldn’t even buy a cardboard box from my wife’s ex-boyfriend, let alone a truck
@Blaise
I get that, but should I really care?

Classic Reddit moment.

I’d walk away from this. High miles on a ‘new’ engine with over 100k miles? You don’t know if it was taken care of or trashed. (Sorry for my bad grammar.)

How much of an ex is this guy? Was he driving your wife around in this truck? This whole situation seems sketchy, man. There are other trucks out there.

That story only works if you’re buying an Aston Martin.

Just get a Chevy, man.

Yeah, because getting a truck that’ll need major work at 100k miles sounds like a solid plan.
@Mars
Haha, my bad. Should’ve added a sarcasm tag.

Lol, I got you. I’ll help fix those downvotes.

I’m not a mechanic, but replacing an engine with a higher-mileage one sounds like a band-aid solution. And if your wife is vouching for him, make sure you do your own homework. Speaking from experience here.
@Remy
Did you have a bad experience with something similar?

Not exactly, just learned the hard way not to trust my wife’s opinions on cars.

He said the piston failed in the old engine, and it was cheaper to replace it with one from a junkyard than fix it. And my wife says he’s a good guy.
@Jordan
Bro, if your wife says he’s a ‘good guy,’ he’s not an ex, he’s a current boyfriend.
@Jordan
Dude, you’ve got bigger problems than this truck.
